The Language of Flowers

Flowers have been an integral part of cultures from the dawn of time. Whether for decoration, special occasions, celebrating, mourning, honoring loved ones, and thousands of other significant life events, no matter what, flowers play a role in our everyday lives. Hi! It’s me, Maegan, with The Floral Pop, a local Nashville florist and wedding vendor who has a passion for designing beautiful and intentional floral pieces for your wedding. My passion is deeply rooted in getting to know each couple individually to design their wedding florals with intentionality and passion. This is why it is crucial to understand the meanings and significance behind each flower and color scheme. To fully grasp the language of flowers, it is vital to understand the deep-rooted history of the meanings behind flowers.

“There was a time when secret messages sent by way of a particularly considered choice in flowers was considered in vogue.” - S. Theresa Dietz from The Complete Language of Flowers: A Definitive and Illustrated History.

Many people throughout the ages have used flowers to convey messages; however, flowers can have different meanings in different circumstances or cultures, so the person receiving the flowers needs to understand and share in similar customs. A perfect example of this displayed in today’s society is how the most common flower on Valentine’s Day is a red rose to show the meanings of passion and love.

“Long before the Victorians fancied nosegays for passing along flirtatious and often passionate love notes, every major world religion had at least one specific plant they considered to be particularly sacred,” S. Theresa Dietz.

Flowers and plants continue to play key roles in culture and religions, and it is crucial to understand the significance of adequately incorporating flowers and plants into your wedding day. S. Theresa Dietz acknowledged, “For example, in Judaism, Islam, Christianity, and Buddhism, the first plant symbol to be solemnly honored is that of a tree.” When thinking of floral arrangements and specific flowers for your wedding, you must make sure to identify and incorporate flowers that are significant to you as an individual and your culture.

Let’s not forget the role color plays in your dream wedding. It helps to create the general theme of your wedding, whether you are looking to create a classic theme with blush colors or a moody theme with jewel tones. Color is essential to creating the desired experience for yourself and your guests. This is why choosing the right colors and the right flowers for your wedding go hand-in-hand. There are remarkable meanings behind floral colors, and a great example of this is in the many colors of roses and their meanings. I have highlighted these below in our flower language breakdown.

Do you want to create a modern, classic wedding with pearls and sleek lines? You would then incorporate whites, greens, blacks, and maybe even blush colors, but the flowers themselves are what make your theme come alive. At the end of the blog, I share my dream color palettes, themes, and textures to show how colors and flowers work together to tell the story of your wedding.

“With or without a garden of one’s own to cultivate, making floral selections that are pertinent and personally meaningful is akin to wishing the event well with good luck and positive energies. This is especially important when planning any flower-worthy special event, most notably with regard to weddings and Quinceañeras,” S. Theresa Dietz.

This thought perfectly breaks down my belief that each wedding should utilize and incorporate florals that match their aesthetic, vibes, and themes while trying to avoid following too many popular trends. Your wedding florals should be individual and highlight your wedding to make it uniquely your own.

Below is a full breakdown of wedding florals and their meanings. You can browse through flowers that you would want to incorporate into your wedding and make notes of their symbols and meanings. This is a way to understand each flower more and choose flowers that connect with you and your wedding theme.

Wedding Flower meanings, symbols, and more, according to The Complete Language of Flowers by S. Theresa Dietz:

In today’s society, we use flowers in numerous ways, but you should always remember the significance of WHY we utilize flowers to convey meanings and feelings to others. Weddings are a perfect example of how flowers represent love, beauty, passion, lifelong loyalty, honor, commitment, and so much more. Flowers highlight your wedding theme and overall vibe while displaying your personality as a couple.

Trends are important to keep track of, and understanding how to incorporate trends you enjoy into your wedding is critical. Choosing flowers that match your personality will add a personal touch to trends and make them your own.
